Laurie J. James, Founder & CEO of LaurieJJames.com, has spent nearly four decades transforming careers and lives through heartfelt coaching, strategic résumé writing, and authentic leadership. From humble beginnings to global impact, her story celebrates resilience, purpose, and the art of helping others shine with clarity and confidence.

In a world where careers shift with every technological tide and professional identities evolve overnight, few have navigated the waters of reinvention as gracefully as Laurie J. James, Founder and CEO of LaurieJJames.com. Laurie has helped over 14,000 people throughout the world for almost 40 years. She is more than just a résumé writer or job coach; she is a mentor, a friend, and a catalyst for change.

Her journey—rooted in resilience, compassion, and faith—stands as a testament to the power of purpose-driven entrepreneurship and lifelong learning.

The Spark That Started It All

In 1986, when Laurie was managing seven independent oil and gas companies, her professional life took an unexpected turn. Her boss, aware of an imminent industry downturn, offered to pay for her business incorporation—a gesture of faith that would alter her destiny.

That small act of generosity gave birth to Just Your Type, Inc., a local typing service in Louisiana. When the oil bust devastated the region’s economy, Laurie faced uncertainty like many others. Yet, what could have been a setback became an awakening.

“A close friend asked me to help with her résumé,” Laurie recalls. “She became my first client, and I discovered my calling to help others navigate career uncertainty with confidence.”

What began as a typing service transformed into a full-fledged career strategy enterprise. Over the next 18 years, Laurie built a thriving company and earned an exceptional reputation for quality, compassion, and innovation.

After selling her firm and initially relishing what she expected to be a peaceful phase of life, an unforeseen twist occurred. She attended a Mary Kay event (the weekend of Hurricane Katrina), which lead her back to full-time work.

“Life had other plans,” she says with a smile. “That weekend changed everything. What began as a sidestep became a fulfilling new journey that deepened my ability to coach and connect with clients on a personal level.”

Four years later, when a former client asked her to update his résumé, Laurie felt a divine nudge. It was time to return refreshed, refocused, and ready. That request ignited the birth of LaurieJJames.com, a platform where career strategy meets heart-centered guidance.

A Mission Rooted in Service and Purpose

Ask Laurie what drives her, and she’ll tell you her mission has always been simple: “Deliver exceptional service, stay ahead of industry trends, and treat every client as if they are my only client.”

Every client relationship at LaurieJJames.com begins with deep and careful listening. Laurie sees each résumé not as a document, but as a story waiting to be told with precision, empathy, and authenticity.

“What distinguishes me is my combination of technical expertise and heart-centered coaching,” she explains. “I help people find clarity, confidence, and purpose in their professional journey.”

Her clients come from all around the world and work in a variety of industries, from young grads to C-level executives. Nonetheless, her approach is consistent: purpose-driven, strategic, and personal.

Laurie believes that transformation is about more than just finding work; it is also about discovering one’s own potential. She measures success through impact, not metrics. “When a client is satisfied, they’ll refer others. That’s my truest measure of success,” she says.

She fondly recalls one of her most memorable clients, a college graduate whose résumé she wrote over 30 years ago. “He went on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees in Statistics and eventually became President of my alma mater,” she shares. “Every time he sees me, he says, ‘Thank you for writing my first résumé!’ That’s the kind of legacy I cherish.”

Evolving Through Change: From Typewriters to AI

Laurie’s career spans a tremendous period of progress (from electric typewriters to AI). Her versatility has been her superpower.

“My parents taught me that change is constant; if you don’t pivot, you’ll experience a setback,” she reflects. “When I started Just Your Type, I worked on an electric typewriter. Soon after, I bought my first personal computer and laser printer. That felt like a leap of faith.”

Laurie prioritized curiosity above fear with each move (email, websites, social media, and now AI-powered application tracking tools). “Each change has been an opportunity to learn and serve clients better,” she says. “Knowledge removes fear.”

When ATS and AI tools revolutionized résumé screening, Laurie doubled down on learning.“I remember sitting next to an MIT graduate at a career conference who reminded me that automation is just part of the process. Humans still make the final decisions,” she says. “That perspective keeps me focused on crafting résumés that speak to both technology and people.”

Her secret to staying relevant? Lifelong learning.

The Power of Credentials and Credibility

Laurie’s name is accompanied by a long list of impressive titles, including Master Career Director, Certified Résumé Writer, and Global Career Coach, all of which establish her as an acknowledged authority in her industry.

She was the first in Louisiana to achieve twelve industry credential, driven by a deep desire for excellence. “Each certification is a commitment to growth and relevance,” she says. “The strategies that worked in 1986 are obsolete today. I owe it to my clients to stay current.”

Her status as one of only 12 Master Career Directors worldwide reflects her leadership in shaping global industry standards. These designations, she says, are “not just letters after my name … they’re a reflection of my promise to serve clients with skill, heart, and integrity.”

Coaching with Compassion: A Process of Discovery

Every new client begins their journey with Laurie through a discovery conversation, a safe space to identify goals, challenges, and potential. “If I’m not the right fit, I’ll refer them to someone who is,” she notes.

Those who proceed receive a complimentary résumé critique, followed by a custom strategy aligned with their industry, career stage, and aspirations.

“My goal has always been the same: deliver a portfolio that builds confidence and momentum.,” Laurie explains. “Whether it’s a college graduate entering the workforce or an executive pivoting industries, I help clients clarify who they are and where they’re going.”

Her services range from hourly coaching to complete career branding packages, encompassing résumés, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and comprehensive interview preparation.

Lessons from Failure: The Courage to Pivot

Laurie’s success story is built not only on triumphs but also on lessons learned from missteps.

In 1999, she launched Hitthemall.com, an ambitious online business concept that, in many ways, was ahead of its time. Despite securing investors, building a strong team, and marketing aggressively, the venture failed.

“It was devastating at first,” she admits. “I had poured my heart into it. But that failure taught me the importance of timing, scalability, and market readiness.”

She now sees that chapter as a cornerstone of her growth. “Failure isn’t final. It’s formative. You learn, pivot, and move forward stronger,” Laurie reflects. “That lesson has carried me through every career transition since.”

A Heart for the Underserved

One of Laurie’s most important undertakings was assisting offenders in preparing for reintegration into the workforce.

“It was one of the most humbling experiences of my career,” she tells me. “One man stayed in prison for more than a decade. We reframed his prison experience (maintenance, mentorship, and leadership) as transferable talents.”

Within weeks of his release, he secured employment. That success reaffirmed Laurie’s core belief: everyone deserves a second chance.

“It reminded me that transformation is always possible when we combine skill, compassion, and faith,” she says softly.

Balancing Growth with Authenticity

Despite her global client base and growing demand, Laurie continues to run a boutique, high-touch practice focused on quality and authenticity.

“I co-founded the Professional Résumé Writing and Research Association (which was later rebranded to Career Directors International), to promote collaboration over competition,” she explains. “Through that network, I maintain standards, share best practices, and refer clients to trusted peers.”

This ecosystem of shared learning has enabled Laurie to maintain consistency, even as the industry scales rapidly. “I focus on quality, not volume,” she adds. “Each client deserves my full attention.”

Leadership and Legacy

Laurie’s parents inspired her leadership style. Her father, a U.S. Air Force JAG officer and attorney, led with quiet strength and generosity. Her mother, a graceful mentor and guide, embodied calm resilience.

“They exemplified servant leadership as power through compassion and consistency.” Laurie reflects.

Interestingly, Laurie didn’t see herself as a natural leader in her early years. “I was small for my age, shy, and unsure,” she recalls. “But when I became a majorette in high school, I learned that leadership isn’t about volume, it’s about presence.”

That insight still guides her coaching style today. “True leadership is about showing up, listening, and believing in others, especially when they don’t yet believe in themselves,” she says. “You don’t have to roar to lead. Sometimes the most powerful voice is the one that speaks softly but with conviction.”

The Writer’s Spirit: Storytelling Beyond the Résumé

Laurie’s creative spirit found new expression through her book, “About Faces”, inspired by her late father. “It was a love letter to him and a reflection of my own professional journey,” she says.

Writing and motivational speaking have since become integral to her work. “Speaking allows me to reach new audiences, inspire confidence, and remind people that their story matters,” she shares. “Both writing and speaking complement my coaching, as they help people see themselves as the heroes of their own narratives.”

Hiring with Integrity: Building a Culture of Care

When it comes to collaboration, Laurie prioritizes character over credentials. “I look for honesty, humility, and a willingness to learn,” she emphasizes. “Skill can be developed; integrity can’t.”

Whether partnering with résumé writers, editors, or career coaches, she seeks alignment in values and vision. “A good partnership is built on shared respect, gratitude, and an eagerness to grow together.”

Wisdom for the Next Generation

For those aspiring to enter the career coaching or résumé writing profession, Laurie’s advice is both practical and profound: find a mentor.

“Seek someone who has weathered industry shifts and economic changes,” she advises. “Learn from their experience, offer your skills in return, and approach the relationship with mutual respect.”

She also stresses the importance of technological fluency. “The future belongs to those who blend empathy with innovation. Understanding AI, digital branding, and online presence is essential, but so is human connection.”

Above all, Laurie believes that success begins with service. “Help others first. The rest follows.”

A Life of Purpose, Poise, and Perseverance

Nearly 40 years since that first résumé changed her path, Laurie J. James continues to inspire thousands of professionals to rediscover their confidence and reclaim their purpose.

Her story is one of faith over fear, service over self, and heart over hustle. In an age defined by algorithms and automation, Laurie remains a reminder that authenticity never goes out of style.

“I believe God placed me here to help people see themselves as capable, worthy, and equipped for greatness,” she says. “The true reward is watching someone walk into their purpose, fully seen and ready to shine.”
