In 2005, he was appointed vice president of ExxonMobil Chemical Company in Houston, Texas, where he managed global specialty-chemical businesses.
In 2008, he became the director of refining for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, at ExxonMobil Refining and Supply Company. He operated out of Brussels, Belgium. By 2010, Woods became vice president of supply and transportation in Fairfax, Virginia. It allowed him experience at various segments across the entire business line in both upstream and downstream operations of the company.
In 2012, his efforts and commitment paid off as he was elected president of ExxonMobil Refining and Supply Company and vice president of Exxon Mobil Corporation. In 2014, he was elected as a senior vice president of Exxon Mobil Corporation, and two years later, he was elected President and a member of the board of directors.
On January 1, 2017, Woods was voted in as ExxonMobil Chairman and CEO succeeding Rex Tillerson, who had resigned after taking on the role of United States Secretary of State. As Chairman and CEO, Woods leads ExxonMobil’s efforts to meet the world’s rising energy demand while adhering to a solution for the challenges of climate change and other related environmental issues.
Besides all the work at ExxonMobil, Woods has a significant presence in the following organizations: the American Petroleum Institute, the National Petroleum Council, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
