Compact laser particle accelerator system by TAU Systems

In a groundbreaking move for next-generation science and technology, TAU Systems has announced a strategic collaboration with laser giant Thales to deliver the world’s first commercial compact laser-driven particle and radiation sources. The partnership merges TAU Systems’ cutting-edge innovation in laser-plasma acceleration with Thales’ four decades of excellence in high-power laser technology.

This alliance aims to revolutionize access to particle acceleration technologies by offering complete, container-sized laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) systems. These powerful tools generate electrons, neutrons, X-rays, and even Gamma rays — enabling applications in aerospace electronics testing, advanced medical imaging, cancer therapy, and semiconductor development.

The first system is already installed at TAU Labs in Carlsbad, California, with additional “beam-time-as-a-service” facilities planned globally to democratize access for researchers and industry partners.

“It’s exciting to team up with Thales, whose leadership in Titanium:Sapphire laser systems accelerates our mission to make particle accelerators compact, affordable, and accessible,” said Bjorn Manuel Hegelich, CEO of TAU Systems.

Tugdual Le Bouar, Director at Thales, added, “This partnership blends our laser innovations with TAU’s breakthrough acceleration technology to unlock extraordinary new applications in science and industry.”

At the heart of TAU’s system is a revolutionary LWFA that mimics ocean waves to accelerate electrons through plasma, reaching gradients 1,000 times greater than traditional accelerators. This compact platform fits inside a shipping container, drastically reducing infrastructure needs while offering extreme precision — from tracking drug interactions to advancing chip lithography.

TAU’s proprietary use of metal nanoparticles, which precisely time electron injection into the plasma wave, marks a significant leap in control and efficiency.

Together, TAU Systems and Thales are lighting the way for a new era in particle physics, imaging, and innovation.
