Every year the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) creates a list of hot trends in the fitness industry for the coming year.
The top trend for 2015 is body weight training. The basic principle isn’t new. Using our own body weight to create an effective workout goes back to the basics. Think of such familiar exercises as push-ups, lunges and squats, and you’re thinking about body weight training.
“It’s no surprise to see body weight training claiming the top trend spot this year,” said Walter R. Thompson, lead author of this year’s survey. “These kinds of exercises provide the benefit of requiring little to no equipment and are incorporated into many fitness programs that are currently popular.”
High-intensity interval training takes the second top trend spot. This type of workout involves short bursts of exercise followed by a short period of recovery. This training provides a dynamic workout with many health benefits in a short session, usually less than 30 minutes.
